Why EMA’s MSSG Matters When Shortages Become Safety Issues

EMA says the Executive Steering Group on Shortages and Safety of Medicinal Products (MSSG) was established under Regulation 2022/123 and is responsible for helping ensure a robust response to issues affecting the quality, safety, efficacy, and supply of medicinal products during major events and public-health emergencies.

That is important because it shows shortages are not only a logistics problem. In some contexts they become quality and safety issues too, which means the organizations dealing with them need cross-functional rather than siloed responses. That broader conclusion is an inference from EMA’s formal description of the MSSG mandate.

For PV teams, the lesson is that the boundaries of safety work can widen quickly under stress conditions. Supply disruption, crisis management, and product oversight can all intersect.
