FDA’s 10 Good AI Practice Principles: What They Mean for PV Teams

The FDA’s Guiding Principles of Good AI Practice in Drug Development, published on 14 January 2026, may not have been written specifically for pharmacovigilance, but they offer one of the clearest regulatory signals yet about how health authorities expect AI to be developed, governed, and maintained in regulated environments. FDA lists ten principles, including human-centric design, a risk-based approach, clear context of use, multidisciplinary expertise, data governance and documentation, lifecycle management, and clear essential information.

For PV teams, this matters because many of the most discussed AI use cases in pharmacovigilance — case triage, literature surveillance, signal detection support, coding assistance, narrative drafting, duplicate detection, and workflow prioritization — sit directly inside regulated or compliance-sensitive processes. Even if the FDA document is framed around drug development broadly, the underlying expectations are highly relevant to digital PV.

One of the strongest messages in the FDA principles is that AI should be human-centric by design. In a pharmacovigilance context, that matters because AI outputs are rarely the final answer. They usually influence a reviewer, a medical assessor, a quality check, or a safety decision. That makes it risky to treat AI like an autonomous black box. Instead, the FDA’s framing supports a model where human oversight remains central, especially when decisions could affect patient safety, reporting quality, or signal interpretation.

Another key principle is clear context of use. This is especially important in PV because the same tool can behave very differently depending on where it is deployed. An AI model that helps sort incoming safety emails is not the same as one that supports medical review or helps summarize signal evidence. The regulatory risk, validation burden, and quality expectations change depending on the exact task. FDA’s emphasis on context of use is a reminder that “AI for PV” is too broad to be meaningful without defining the specific function the model performs.

The FDA also highlights data governance and documentation. That should immediately resonate with pharmacovigilance professionals. If a team cannot explain what data trained or informed a model, how performance is assessed, what limitations exist, and how changes are tracked over time, that team will struggle to defend the tool in a regulated setting. In PV, documentation is not optional administrative overhead. It is part of credibility.

The principle of lifecycle management is equally relevant. AI in PV is not a one-time implementation. Models may drift, data sources may change, business rules may evolve, and user behavior may introduce new risks. FDA’s principles imply that responsible AI requires ongoing monitoring, periodic reassessment, and clear ownership. That is very close to how mature pharmacovigilance systems already think about validated processes and controlled change.

For safety organizations, the practical lesson is that AI readiness is not just about buying a tool. It is about building a governance model around the tool. Teams that understand this early are more likely to implement digital PV capabilities that are both useful and defensible.

Why this matters for PV professionals
FDA’s AI principles suggest that the future of digital pharmacovigilance will reward teams that combine innovation with discipline. The winners will not be the teams using the most AI. They will be the teams using it with the clearest governance, strongest documentation, and best alignment to regulated work.
